How we work

A kitchen you could eat off

Every sweet is traced from the milk that arrived that morning to the counter it was sold from. We know which batch went where, when it was made and when it expires — which is why nothing stale ever reaches a box.

  1. 01Milk before six

Buffalo milk from Kavre arrives at the Balaju kitchen before dawn, split and drained while it is still warm.

  2. 02Kneaded by hand

You can feel when chhena is ready in a way you cannot measure. No machine has ever convinced us otherwise.

  3. 03Four hours in syrup

Rushing this is the single most common way to ruin a rasgulla. We have never found a shortcut worth taking.

  4. 04On the counter by nine

Two runs a day to every counter in the Valley. What does not sell by evening never comes back out.

We have thrown away more sweets than most shops have sold. That is not waste — that is the standard.

One kitchen. 12 counters.

Everything is made in Balaju and driven out twice a day. The counter nearest you sells exactly what the counter across town sells, because it came off the same tray that morning.

What the Valley says

My grandfather would send someone all the way to New Road for their rasgulla. Fifty years on, I still go myself.

We ordered sixty boxes for our daughter’s wedding. They arrived at seven in the morning, still warm. Nobody had to ask twice.

I have been buying their sandesh every Saturday since the Durbar Marg counter opened. It has never once been different.

Before you ask

The things people ring us about

Do you deliver across Kathmandu?

We deliver bulk and gifting orders anywhere inside the Ring Road, and to Lalitpur and Bhaktapur by arrangement. Single boxes are counter collection only — call your nearest store and we will keep it aside.

How long do the sweets keep?

Chhena sweets — rasgulla, sandesh, chomchom — are at their best the same day and should be eaten within two days, refrigerated. Dry sweets like kaju katli and barfi keep for a week. Nothing we sell contains preservatives.

Can I order for a wedding or a bhoj?

Yes, and we would rather you gave us notice. Five kilos or more needs a day; anything over twenty-five kilos needs three. Call 01-5970 100 or email orders@kolkatasweets.com.np.

Is everything vegetarian?

Everything on the sweet counter is vegetarian. A few bakery items contain egg and are marked with a red mark on the menu, both on the website and on the counter card.

Still not sure? Call 01-5970 100 — someone at the counter picks up between 07 AM and 9 PM.
